Astronaut to Speak at UMB Dr. Jeffrey A. Hoffman will give a talk about the Hubble Telescope on Wednesday, September 23, 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm at the Campus Center in Ballroom C. He spent more than 1,211 hours and 21.5 million miles in space during five missions aboard NASA space shuttles Discovery, Columbia, Atlantis, and Endeavor. He was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2007, and is a professor in MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Currently he teaches space operations and designs and is involved in the International Space Station. New Science Building to Begin Construction Shortly Construction on the first new academic building at UMB in years, part of UMass Boston's 25-year Master Plan, will begin shortly, Chancellor Motley said. The funding will come from the Higher Education bond bill, in which UMass Boston will receive $125 million in new funding to help jumpstart building plans and shore up existing facilities.

The bulk of the funding, $100 million, is designated for a new academic building, while the remainder is for stabilizing the campus substructure. The buildings are being designed by architectural firm Goody Clancy, and they estimate the new Science building will take 18-24 months to construct. Co-Sponsor a Campus Blood Drive University Health Services coordinates several blood drives during each academic year. UMB's next blood drive is scheduled for October 7, 2009.

If your department, group or center would like to co-sponsor an upcoming blood drive contact Linda Jorgensen, (617)287-5680, Director of UHS Health Education and Wellness Program. University Health Services will work with the American Red Cross to schedule and promote your blood drive. What is needed is assistance on the day of the drive to assist with the registration and staffing the 'canteen'. There is no prior training or experience required, just a group of people who are willing to provide their time and energy.
